You know those brief moments during your day, when time stops for a minute or two and the little voice in your head says, hey, this is a special moment? These times take you away from your routine and rambling thoughts. In my new series of paintings called Jump into the Sea, I am allowing that special moment to continue to live on. I extend and freeze time in order to re-live each moment that I paint. These paintings have a bold playfulness and reveal a sense of fun. The subjects of these paintings are raw and caught in the moment: senior citizens doing water aerobics with noodles, Coney Island sunbathers, a Mexican wedding celebration, a sunset drum circle with hula hooping Floridians and the Naked Cowboy in Times Square. The common theme that threads through these boldly simplified portrait-landscapes is a blithesome celebration of everyday life.
